About This Tour

TIZNIT OLD CITY ( Capital of Silver arts )

Tiznit, the provincial capital, is a city of 60,000 inhabitants built around 1883 by Moulay Hassan I, the 17th sultan of the Alaouite dynasty. Located 80 km south of Agadir, bordered to the west by the sea, 12 km away, and to the east by the Anti-Atlas Mountains. It is also a gateway to southern Morocco and Mauritania. Tiznit, the provincial capital nestled inland, is a haven of peace on the edge of the burning desert. Surrounded by its ancient walls, the city is especially renowned for its crafts; goldsmiths who work with silver, and to a lesser extent gold, populate the old quarter and offer remarkable objects and jewelry.

The filigree silver and jewelry adorned with amethysts are particularly noteworthy. The presence of these numerous goldsmiths is explained by the city's geographical location on the edge of the desert; it was one of the stops for ancient caravans that once ensured international trade in this part of the continent. The caravaners exchanged their products for objects made of precious metals. Tiznit has 29 towers and 8 gates. First, you will stroll through the old medina with its open-air market, discovering superb architectural designs with unique red houses and blue iron doors. Then, the city is renowned for the goldsmiths who populate the old quarter. They work with silver and, to a lesser extent, gold, and offer remarkable objects and jewelry.

Mechouar Square

Stroll through the medina and discover stunning architectural designs. You'll find unique salmon-red houses and blue iron gates. At sunset, visit the Mechouar, the main square, which offers many fun activities, storytellers, and local artists. The Great Mosque, located near the square, houses an unusual minaret.

Souk / Market

Mechouar, the medina's central square, offers easy access to the souk, where you'll find an open-air market selling fresh produce and other household items. One of the must-visit places in Tiznit is the Jeweler's Souk, which sells locally made jewelry. Before purchasing an item at the market, it's a good idea to visit the Artisanal Ensemble, where you can learn more about the prices of items on the market.
